Whether you love math or hate it, I think we can all agree that this challenging subject requires plenty of time and effort in college. I'm here to give you some tips that allowed me to get A's in all three of my math courses my freshman year. Thanks for reading!
*Summarized list at the end if you're crunched on time*
1. Keep Track of Your Assignments and Important Dates
The first tip for students who want to excel is to mark when all of your assignments are due and the dates of quizzes or exams. I use a physical planner to do this, but you can also use your phone's calendar or a planner app. After you receive your syllabus, put all of this information somewhere and make sure to regularly look at it so you won't miss anything!
2. Take Notes in a Notebook
When it comes to other subjects, I prefer taking notes on my laptop and I know some of you also do this. However, I've found that when I take notes in a notebook dedicated to the subject, I have an easier time looking over everything and memorizing it. Even if you don't normally take notes for your classes, I highly recommend starting to if you want to help yourself perform better in the course.
3. Practice, Practice, and Practice (MOST IMPORTANT!)
This is the most important tip that I have for you: redo practice problems multiple times! If you are given homework, practice those problems or similar ones even after completing your assignment. If you are given a study packet, redo that packet at least 3 times every fews days leading up to a quiz or exam. For my quizzes and final especially, I would redo homework problems and study packets starting from a week before the test day and repeating them every few days. If you are crunched on time, only redo the problems that you feel less confident on so you can maximize your time. You might start to think that redoing the practice problems for a third time is excessive, but I promise you, if you feel like you have it all down, that's a great sign that you will be prepared for the exam.
4. Look Over Your Notes and Completed Practice Problems Before Tests
Even if you feel extremely prepared, I would recommend going to your class a little early and looking over all of your material found in notes and completed assignments/practice problems for a last time before the test. It'll help refresh your memory and make you feel less likely to forget any last minute details.
5. Seek Help/Tutoring if You Need It
Now I know that some college professors or tutors seem intimidating, but it is better to seek help and know that you tried as best as you could than to regret not seeking help. Most colleges offer free tutoring on campus and if not, there are countless free online resources that can help. Any effort is better than none!
6. Be Proud of What You Have Accomplished
I titled this guide as "how to ace your college math class" and not "how to get an A in your college math class" for a reason. While I know that it is difficult to be satisfied with a grade that you might not have wanted, I would like to encourage you to be proud of yourself. You put in time and effort to trying your best to succeed which is amazing. Math is typically a hard subject and even with hard work, it may not be enough, but you did what you could and I am proud of you. College is difficult and you are still here! Be kind to yourself and remind yourself that you are worth more than a grade. You worked hard and that deserves some recognition. Allow yourself to accept it and then treat yourself through some self care or anything that makes you feel happy. You are a smart individual and I hope you repeat this to yourself and believe it, or work towards believing it :)
